Oss & Teri

Saturday 28 June 2014, 2.30pm

Put a sixth and final coat on the portrait of my friends Oss Simcocks and Teri Welles, in preparation for entry into the Moran later this year. It’s based on the simple observation that Oss is rather tall, Teri not so much. I was challenging the Moran requirement that the portrait had to include ‘head and shoulders’, which this portrait has cumulatively. Unfortunately this phrase is now removed, the only requirement being that it’s a likeness.

Also planning on entering my unintentional portrait of Dave from Dubbo (of the Pilliga blockade). Need to find out what his surname is first. Anybody out there with Dave’s contact details please get in touch.

Stumpy

This is a drawing I did today of my mate Stumpy sunning his neck ruff. Stumpy’s our friendly resident Tawny Frogmouth.

Mothers' Day

Monday, 2 June 2014, 5.15pm

Finally got around to painting up a life drawing I did on my last day of tutoring at the end of March. It was of Mandy, who was nine months pregnant. Put the last coat of paint on on Mothers’ Day, hence the title. Lead white does the trick again.

Henri and Vera Again

Monday, 2 June 2014, 5pm

Finished painting Henri and Vera’s portraits. Henri’s worked without any dramas –

Love what Lead White does. Pity it’s illegal to sell it in Australia. Mind you, it’s a bit toxic. Used zinc white on the third coat (first opacity) and lead in the top layer.

It took a lot of work and five coats of paint to get Vera’s likeness right. The initial drawing was a bit off track. Made a big deal of the cupboard knobs.
